My Mask
Mexican Whiteboy
Pre-write
Danny wears a low confidence mask because he doesn’t want to be that new kid that thinks he is better than everyone else. The author in the book Mexican Whiteboy states “ And Danny’s brown. Half-Mexican brown. A shade darker than all the white kids at his private school, Leucadia Prep. But whenever Danny comes down here, to National City- where his dad grew up, where all his aunts and uncles and cousins still live- he feels pale. A full shade lighter. Albino almost. I feel like Danny also doesn't give himself enough credit for who good of a ball player he is, and Danny is self conscious about not speaking spanish when everyone else does. Uno wears a man box mask manly because Uno is the only black kid in the neighborhood In the book Mexican Whiteboy the author Matt De La Pena state “ Not only is Uno the only black kid in the neighborhood-or negrito, as the Mexicans call him (even though his mom is Mexican, too)- he’s also stronger, quicker, taller, a better fighter”. I think that Uno gets into fights to prove that he is as strong as all the other kids, even if he is darker.
In the book Mexican Whiteboy explains socialization by showing two characteristics of people with different race and economic and how that shapes their masks and changes their experiences. This book is about two different Mexican kids that have different backgrounds and somewhat different race. Danny is half Mexican half White and Uno is half Mexican half African American, I think that the author did a good job on showing the concepts of these two characters with different backgrounds and how they are different but at the same time they have some similar traits. I like it the book because it gives great examples how that are different because their race and economic class which is still relevant problem in our society today.
I gained new insights on race from the two main characters Uno and Danny. The only black kid the neighborhood Uno who has to go through more obstacles like beginning stronger, a better fighter, and quicker into order to fit into the basic roles of society. Uno is a poor kid that doesn’t get to have all the luxurious things that the middle class or upper class have. For example he doesn’t have a decent baseball mit. Since Uno is a black kid he doesn't get the job opportunities that all the other kids get. Danny has to deal with the complete opposite because he is lighter than everyone in National City. Danny doesn’t want to be this new kid that thinks he knows very thing, so Danny is this quiet kid that doesn't give himself enough credit for how good of a baseball player he is, or how good of a person he is in general. Danny is a middle class his mom and uncle work and he lives in a decent house, and he also goes to a private high school called Leucadia Prep. Because of the differences that these two characters have in race and economic class it has helped me better understand how belonging to different race or economic class can create challenges.

Seminar Reflection
Reaction:
Lydia said “ If Uno didn’t live with his mom but his dad how would that change Danny.” Would Danny's dad be a good influence for Danny or would his dad made Danny’s life harder meaning more drama. I do think that having a father figure in Danny’s life could really make a change in his life, it could give him more confidence in his baseball career and in his personal life. It make all the blame than he holds himself up too go away because I think that the blame is coming from his dad being in jail.
Connections:
The movie I watched called Water the main character Lisa Ray is in a group of windows that are forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It focuses on a relationship between one of the widows, who wants to escape the social restrictions imposed on widows, and a man who is from the highest caste and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. This ties into socialization in a county where the religion based caste system doesn’t allow people specifically women to change their social status. At a very young age I meet a girl who was lucky enough to leave her country before her mother could force her into an arranged marriage, with a much older man that she did not know.
Self-Evaluation:
I think I did good with the quote and analysis connection, perspective, and the text reference/ evidence. I think I need to work on clarification and communication I could have asked questions when people made a statement that I did quite understand. I should have communicated more so way I could get more points on the socratic seminar, and I could have shared more of my thoughts or my comments even if it didn’t quite fit into the topic we were talking about.
Most beautiful Line:
One the last page of the book it says “ The two of them sit in silence and stare at the pale colors slowly fingering their way into the dark sky, around the recycling plant. Even when they hear the rumble of a distant tain, neither of them moves. They stay with the sky. The moment. Soon they’ll have to leave the tracks altogether and hop on the specific bus Uno has written down.” I think that is beautiful because it is a end of a long train ride that leads to a new beginning.
