Project Reflection
Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a two day Spanish Holiday on November 1st and 2nd celebrating the lives of the loved ones that have passed on. This celebration is slip up into separate days. November 1st celebrates the deceased youth on November 2nd the deceased adults are honored. Dia de los Muertos originated from the Aztecs who celebrated with a festival for the goddess of the underworld “Mictecacihuatl” This Mexican Holiday was originally celebrated in the summer to collide with “The day of the innocents.” Families and friends build altars in the memory of the dead, they make sugar skulls, marigolds, and make sweetbreads and trinkets. Families visit graves and bring offerings such as candles, photos, flowers and food.
I celebrate Dia de los Muertos in the memory of my grandma Veronika. I chose to celebrate her because I never really new her, she died when I was three years old. I never got to have a connection with my grandma, because I never knew her I wanted to gathering information about my abuela - grandma. I was very exciting because I felt like I was getting to become more connected with my grandma. I learned about the things she liked to do, her personality, her hair color, eye color, were she was born, where she lived most of her life, how many siblings she had, and when she died. After learning about my grandma I brainstormed ideas for my altar. I decided that I wanted to have a main pictures of my grandma in the center of my altar and two smaller pictures of my grandma on the sides with some candles. Along with some roses and pastries because my grandma loved to work in her rose garden and bake. With all of these things put together I think my altar looked good it honored my grandma Veronika. Creating the altar on exhibition night was exciting because my ideas came together. Exhibiting my altar was good I talked to my parents in spanish, I did better than I thought I was going to do. Having the presser off after the exhibition was a good feeling.
During this project I learned how to describe a person's traits and personality in spanish, and I learned how to make an ofrenda. Overall I feel that I did well on this project I think that my written description of my abuela had good vocab and it was descriptive. I really liked this project, learning about a new tradition was amazing. Starting Spanish was a challenge at first but with practice it became easy and was enjoyable.
