Socialization and Identity Project:
The purpose of this project was to learn about socialization in depth. I learned that socialization is what a culture values or what it finds disturbing. This can change a lot and this kind of culture also passes through many generations. In my humanities class I learned about agent groups and target groups, what kinds of cultures influence a person, and what stereotypes are the most present in the culture we live in today. While we read different articles in class about the stereotypes, agent groups, and target groups I became aware of the many stereotypes that I saw on a daily basics that I didn't notice. I realize know that many people wear masks to hide themselves from other people.

Mask
My mask didn’t look good at first because it had lots of bumps on it, my mask wasn't getting any better even after sanding it, and putting the mod podge on it. But after starting to paint my mask the texture started to become not so important because I realized that people pay more attention to what was on the mask. Since the texture of my mask isn’t very professional I felt like the painting portion had to be even better than my peers, so I decided for it to have lots of detail. I wanted the audience to get more dialed into the meaning of my mask. I am proud of how much detail I was able to paint. On the “real me side” of my mask I painted a three dimensional tree, a sun that has a eye in the middle, grass that has different colors that makes it blend together, and a blue sky in the background. On the other side of my mask titled “what society made me” there is a girl wearing makeup, lip stick, and fashioned hair. I am proud of the time and energy I put into making my mask look complete.
Quote:
I am really proud of the way my socialization essay turned out. I could choose many parts of my essay as a quote to write why I would be proud of them. If I had to pick one of my best quote from my essay it would be, “I have been socialized by the media and my peers to believe that as a white person the privileges I have are natural, as a female I have to have a perfect body, and as a teenager I have to be cool.” I used this sentence as my thesis statement. For me it is very difficult to put my thoughts into grammatically correct sentence or sentences. When I write I have to refine my work over and over again in order to make sure I expressed myself clearly, so others can understand how I feel, what I think, and my values. I believe this quote I choose shows the most refinement, and it shows the time and energy I spent on making my essay the best it could be.
Biggest Take-away:
The most memorable experience would be when my partner and I created each other's paper mache mask. It was a nerve wracking feeling when I had my face covered in plaster of paris strips and not being able to breath through my mouth or my nose. This was the first time I have ever felt like I could suffocate, it helped me to watch my partner go through the process of making her mask first without freaking out. This experience helped me realize that any time I am afraid in a situation I can move through my fear rather than letting that fear stop me from accomplishing my task. Fear is part of our human experience on a daily bases. Riding my young horse Gypsy out on a trail ride for the first time was one of the scariest moments of my life because there was all these scary thoughts in my head telling me that I would fall off of my horse or she would take off with me. Remembering the scary thoughts under my mask and realizing that they were only thoughts, this helped me enjoy every moment of my ride.
Growth:
I want everyone in my community to know to they don't have to let society tell them they should be someone you are not. I could share this knowledge by writing an article in the animas quilt, I think that the most powerful way to reach out to others is to share a personal story. So I could publish my socialization essay, hoping that my peers would find it valuable. I can also spray paint on the concrete guardrails leading up to our school with a sentence saying “ the best person you can be is you”, which would help my peers remember not to give into peer pressure.
