Project Reflection:
In the beginning of this project we watched a famous movie called All President’s Men, this film was based on the discovery of the Watergate Scandal by the Washington Post. This movie opened my perspective on court cases in the Supreme Court such as Sullivan vs. the New York Times. After watching this movie we focused on bias in journalism, we study was to balance our bias and backed it up with evidence. We also did research on media outlets, we read the news and dissected the article to get better understanding of how journalists write. Then we moved on to finding articles we were interested on and looked at the formatting that journalists use when they write, and then picked a format that we wanted to follow. Our final product was having a launch party with the class to display our articles with the community.
Doing this project has made me realize how the media drives this world. Reading articles on the media made me more aware of how much bias a article can have. Most newspapers have a some sort of a bias but what surprised me was how unbiased sources had a a small amount of a bias. It might be hard to tell if an article has a bias or not. You might see this in The New York Times, if you look closely you can see that there is a small amount of bias in there articles. Having done this project has opened my eyes to being aware to the bias in articles.
My journalistic skills have improved a lot throughout this project. Learning about bias, the impact of journalism on our community, and formatting news articles has made me a better journalist. I grew to become a journalist by learning on how to become one. My biggest challenge was choosing a topic that I wanted to write about. I had a few ideas of what I wanted to write about but I wanted to keep my topic relevant to our school, so I wrote about our ESS department. If I had the chance of doing this project again I would choose to have spend more time on picking my article topic. I would have like to have written about something that I would have had more interest on. I am proud of my final product, I feel that for being a first time journalist I managed to have a high quality article.
